A Most Wanted jpgA Most Wanted Man
Year: 2014
Director: Anton Corbijn
Available: June 19
The superb A Most Wanted Man can’t be described with the usual adjectives, but that’s because director Anton Corbijn’s film is colder and more cerebral—and yet, when the film reaches its final stretches, it’s extraordinarily gripping. This is a recognition of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s wonderfully controlled central performance. You don’t realize how stunning the whole experience really was until it’s over. —Tim Grierson

jpgThe Aviator
Year: 2004
Director: Martin Scorcese
Available: June 1
With Howard Hughes’ larger than life personality and those action-packed scenes of him flying (and crashing) planes, it’s hard not to first think of the famous businessman and aviator as a sort of superhero: a man capable of almost any feat, of withstanding any sort of struggle. But Leonardo DiCaprio’s portrayal of Hughes at his lowest, during Hughes’ anxiety-ridden spirals, is far more compelling and suspenseful than the Beverly Hills plane crash scene itself. —Anita George

Nightcrawler 23.jpegNightcrawler
Year: 2014
Director: Dan Gilroy
Available: June 10
Jake Gyllenhaal’s Louis Bloom is a nocturnal rambler who scrounges for anything he can steal and sell, bolted down or not…When he comes across the lucrative world of nightcrawlers, freelance stringers who race after breaking news stories—the bloodier, the better is the prevailing wisdom—he has the ambition, opportunity and, most importantly, the moral flexibility to excel. Nightcrawler crackles with energy and a dark sense of humor. —Brent McKnight

The_Magdalene_Sisters_poster.jpgThe Magdalene Sisters
Year: 2002
Director: Peter Mullan
Available: June 1
The Magdalene Sisters is a powerful look at the Magdalene convents to which wayward young women were sent, sometimes for the sin of promiscuity, sometimes simply for flirting. This film is undeniably powerful, with three strong portrayals from its leads. Eileen Walsh, portraying a girl whose simple faith leads her down a road to madness, is especially compelling. When she starts screaming, “You’re not a man of God,” I thought the ceiling was going to cave in. —J. Robert Parks

PussyRiot jpgPussy Riot: A Punk Prayer
Year: 2013
Directors: Mike Lerner, Maxim Pozdorovkin
Available: June 15
Three members of the Russian punk anarchic-feminist group Pussy Riot, Maria Alyokhina, Yekaterina Samutsevich and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, were arrested after a disruptive pop-up performance in the middle of a Russian Orthodox service. It sounds like Stalin-era Russia, but these were today’s dates alongside those headlines. —Monica Castillo
