28 Days Later
(2002)

A horror movie list is far from complete without a zombie movie (or two). 28 Days Later strays from the archetype of the slow-moving, moaning zombie to the hyperactive living dead that dart around the screen with the agility of a feral cat. Infected with the “Rage” virus, these modern zombies create a more intense scene for the viewer while painting a post-apoctalyptic analogy of Western civilization with subtle political overtones.

Audition
(1999)
One of the areas in which Japanese filmmakers excel is creating unequivocally unique story lines that dabble in multiple genres. Taking the classic theme of love-turned-deadly and emotional abandonment, extreme horror director Takashi Miike succeeds in terrifying single men the world over through grotesque scenes and psychological twists. From vomit-eating boyfriends in burlap sacks to 12-inch torture needles, Audition may lead you to swear off dating for a while.

Dawn of the Dead
(2004 Remake)

Before director Zach Snyder set his eyes on the swords and sandals hyperviolence of 300 and the post-modern superheroes of The Watchmen, he crafted this lively gorefest with Sarah Polley and Ving Rhames. This update on George Romero's tale of survivors trapped in a mall surrounded by the walking dead surpasses its inspiration with brutally realistic bloodletting and phenomenal characterization.
