Sonic the Hedgehog Slated to Somersault into Theaters 2018

the Blue Blur Coming to the Silver Screen

Games News

Sega Sammy Holdings, the parent company of Sega, is teaming up with Sony pictures to bring Sonic the Hedgehog to the silver screen in 2018.

Company president and CEO Hajime Satomi spoke with The World Folio and confirmed that the film will combine live action and computer-generated effects.

Another film featuring the blue spiky guy was announced to be in the works in 2014, but it remains unclear whether this movie will replace that one. The previously announced project was a CG-animated film in production at Japanese studio Marza Animation Planet.

But this is hardly the hedgehog’s first foray into cinema. In 1998, DV Films released Sonic the Movie on video overseas—a movie based on a two-part anime series that premiered in 1996 in Japan. Cartoon Network’s sonic-premised venture, Sonic Boom has inspired a few poorly received spinoff games. Although Cartoon Network’s program is the most recent addition to the franchise, ABC’s early 90s Sonic the Hedgehog (or Sonic SatAM) is still perhaps the most popular or iconic.

Sonic will celebrate his 25th birthday this June, so this announcement comes as an early gift for the hedgehog franchise.
