Zach Galifianakis Takes His Show on the Road in Absurd First Trailer for Netflix’s Between Two Ferns: The Movie

Between Two Ferns, the modern cringe comedy classic mock-talk show from Zach Galifianakis and Funny or Die, doesn’t exactly scream “in need of a feature film adaptation.” Netflix is giving us one this September all the same, and its absurd first trailer features a veritable cavalcade of famous folks being interviewed you know where.

Netflix’s synopsis for the Scott Aukerman-directed adaptation lays out just how in the hell Between Two Ferns will function as a feature film:

Zach Galifianakis dreamed of becoming a star. But when Will Ferrell discovered his public access TV show Between Two Ferns and uploaded it to Funny Or Die, Zach became a viral laughingstock. Now Zach and his crew are taking a road trip to complete a series of high-profile celebrity interviews and restore his reputation.

As the trailer shows, Galifianakis ends up laying waste to his show’s rep by killing Matthew McConaughey during an interview—an appropriately ridiculous excuse for the Between Two Ferns host and his crew (Lauren Lapkus, Ryan Gaul and Jiavani Linayo) to embark on a star-seeking, show-saving road trip that will serve as the movie’s spine in between those signature interviews. The trailer just gets sillier from there, beginning with McConaughey’s (temporary) death by drowning and going on to feature a truly cringeworthy chicken strips joke, Galifianakis cramming Pringles down his gullet, Ferrell riding a scooter in a cowboy hat and a steamy Chrissy Teigen seduction scene. What happens between two ferns stays between two ferns … because no one is watching.

Between Two Ferns: The Movie’s producers include Funny Or Die’s Mike Farah and Caitlin Daley, plus Aukerman and Galifianakis, who also handled its script. The film’s many game celebs, in addition to the aforementioned McConaughey and Teigen, include Benedict “Benefit Lumberjacks” Cumberbatch, Peter Dinklage, David Letterman, Jason Schwartzman, Tiffany Haddish, Paul Rust, Paul Rudd, Rashida Jones, John “EGOT” Legend, Adam Scott, Brie Larson, Jon “Hot Idiot” Hamm, Awkwafina, Hailee Steinfeld, John Cho, Keanu Reeves and Chance the Rapper.

Between Two Ferns: The Movie comes to Netflix (and not theaters, as a dismayed Galifianakis discovers at trailer’s end) on Sept. 20. See the trailer and key art below, and Netflix’s full September slate here.
