Overwatch Has a New Mad Scientist Hero: Meet Sigma

E-sports flag-bearer Overwatch has a new villainous hero (an adjective/noun pairing that makes sense only in Overwatch terminology): the mad scientist Sigma.

Sigma is a pallid, Eastern European-sounding astrophysicist with eyebrows that match his widow’s peak. He is interested in harnessing the power of black holes to “unlock the secrets of the universe,” but he suffers a terrible accident, in line with the long tradition of experiments gone wrong dating back to Dr. Frankenstein. The accident causes him to develop a Jekyll/Hyde split personality (and, apparently, join Overwatch’s shadowy Talon organization). It also gives him the power to manipulate gravity in ways possibly akin to Zarya’s Graviton Surge. But here’s the catch: Sigma is “unaware that he is being used as a living weapon.” Used by whom? We’re not sure—yet.

Though he’s a scientist, Sigma isn’t fighting in his lab coat. His in-game design has flashy padded shoulders and cyborg-like accents, the latter making him resemble Symmetra and Moira. He can also materialize two black dodecahedrons (black hole bombs?) out of thin air.

If you play his introduction trailer backward, you can hear a few minor easter eggs.

He also looks a little like Gru from the Despicable Me movies.

Anyways, watch Sigma’s creepy origin story trailer below.
