With a jazzy openness borrowed from Astral Weeks, and a hazy, drowned-cathedral aura purloined from The Cowboy Junkies’ Trinity Sessions, former Geraldine Fibbers frontwoman Carla Bozulich essays Willie Nelson’s classic concept album about a murderous preacher on the lam. It’s not as strange an idea as it sounds, if you consider what an odd, left-field hit Nelson’s record was to begin with, and take into account that Bozulich wrote and sang twisted folk songs populated with such characters for most of the ’90s. Nels Cline’s stunning, Knopfler-gone-McLaughlin guitar work is as essential to the record’s potency as is Bozulich’s scratched, arid delivery. Less an homage than a visionary interpretation, it should make you want to own both versions.
