With the impeachment vote looming, and the outcome certain (it’s acquittal), the Senate had one final surprise for us: Mitt Romney, former presidential contender and Utah Republican, announced that he’ll vote to convict Trump and remove him from office. Watch:
Romney acknowledged that his vote won’t make a difference to the result, but invoked history and didn’t mince words when it came to what he thought of Trump’s offenses:
Romney not just voting to convict, he’s ripping Trump anew:
“An appalling abuse of public trust”
“A flagrant assault” on our elections
“Perhaps the most abusive and destructive violation of ones oath of office that I can imagine.”

When the vote happens later on Wednesday, Romney will become the first senator who has ever voted to remove a president from his own party.
