Toni Collette, Merritt Wever Star as Cop Duo in Netflix’s Jarring, Urgent New Unbelievable Trailer

Toni Collette and Merritt Wever star as a cop duo in Netflix’s new trailer for the jarring, gritty limited series Unbelievable. Set for a Sept. 13 premiere, the show also stars Kaitlyn Dever as its lead.

Telling a story that is timely, urgent and needed, the trailer promises us this show will be a tough one to watch.

When teenager Marie Adler (Dever) files a police report claiming she was raped by an intruder in her home, the detectives and even the people closest to her start to doubt her story. But hundreds of miles away in a different state, detectives Grace Rasmussen (Collette) and Karen Duvall (Wever) are ready to believe her. The pair of cops meet while investigating eerily similar intruder rapes on their own turf and team up to catch a potential serial rapist.

The trailer kicks off with a heavy start, as we see Marie give a very personal account of being sexually assaulted. The video then cuts to a cold police department office, where two cops question her story.

“It’s bogus. She made it up,” one officer says after we see Marie crying in an interrogation room.

But there’s hope.

The music picks up as we’re introduced to two badass women hell-bent on putting a serial rapist behind bars and supporting their victims along the way.

“This guy is out there preying on the most vulnerable women he can find,” says Detective Rasmussen. “Where is the outrage?”

We then see Detective Duvall voice similar concerns. “This is not something people get over,” she bursts out angrily. “This is something they carry with them forever.”

But Marie’s words, which close out the trailer, are what cut the deepest.

“Even with people you can trust,” she says, “If the truth is inconvenient, they don’t believe it.”

Promising a biting look at the effects of sexual assault and the broken system victims must muddle through for justice, the series is inspired by ProPublica’s Pulitzer Prize-winning article “An Unbelievable Story of Rape” and an episode from This American Life titled “Anatomy of Doubt.”

Unbelievable is a story of unspeakable trauma, unwavering tenacity and astounding resilience,” a press release explains.

An Academy Award-nominated Australian actress, Collette is best-known for her roles in the palpably horrific Hereditary, the classic haunting thriller (and possibly the best M. Night Shyamalan movie) The Sixth Sense and the sharply funny comedy-drama Little Miss Sunshine. Dever gave a star-making performance in Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart this year, while Emmy winner Wever recently starred in another Netflix limited series, 2017’s acclaimed Godless.

Showrunner Susannah Grant, who’s also worked on Pocahontas, Charlotte’s Web and The 5th Wave, will executive produce the series along with Sarah Timberman, Carl Beverly, Lisa Cholodenko, Ayelet Waldman, Michael Chabon,  Katie Couric, Richard Tofel, Neil Barsky, Robyn Semien and Marie. Grant and Cholodenko direct.

The trailer also features contact information for RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800.656.HOPE (4673) or online at rainn.org.
