San Diego’s Pinback have made a solid, infectious album that instantly brings to mind the angular melodies of Modest Mouse and the mesmerizing vocals of Death Cab For Cutie. The tight guitar riff and rhythmic vocal line of opener “Non-Photo Blue” and the Ben Gibbard-esque “Syracuse” hold the most direct corollaries. Tracks like “Bloods on Fire” and “This Red Book” reveal a more unique approach and, throughout the disc, principal players Armistad Burwell Smith and Rob Crow display an increasing gift for mixing hooks with rich textures. While their lyrics might not offer the same bizarre rewards found in Isaac Brock’s songs, this is a solid disc that grows more listenable with each repeated play.
