Tony Awards 2009 Winners Round-Up
Who said theatre is dead? You wouldn't know it from watching the opening to last night's Tony Awards, that saw Elton John, Liza Minelli and Dolly Parton join the cast of about a million different musicals for a mash-up of Broadway's greatest hits. It was the "biggest and most expensive number in the history of the Tonys," host Neil Patrick Harris observed. "That is why I am your host tonight."
Brett Michaels even joined in on the fun and almost broke his nose. Oh, and a bunch of folks won awards. Some of the evening's notable winners are as follows:
- Elton John's Billy Elliot swept the evening, scooping 10 awards in all
- Yazmina Reza's "comedy of manners without the manners" God of Carnage won awards for best play, best direction, and best leading actress (Marcia Gay Harden)
- Hair (pictured above) took home best revival
- Angela Lansbury won her fifth Tony for her portrayal of Madame Arcati in the revival of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit
- Liza Minelli's concert Liza at the Palace edged out fan-favorite Will Ferrell's You're Welcome America for best special theatrical event
