Bandai America announced Monday that it is bringing back the original Tamagotchi virtual pet to the delight of 90s kids everywhere.
According to the company’s press release, the return will include eight new colors and eight classic colors, to be released in two different generations. The programming and packaging is pulled directly from 1997, and once again allows users to feed, clean up after and discipline the Tamagotchi. One of two game options, one character-based and one number-based, will be included in each toy and seven different adult Tamagotchi types will be possible.
This follows Bandai’s original Tamagotchi revival in 2017, in which they modernized the toy to the distaste of fans everywhere.
“We have found that since we brought the Tamagotchi back last year in a new form, fans have been clamoring for the return of the originals that launched in 1997,” said Tara Badie, Bandai America Marketing Director, in a statement. “We have decided to bring back the original Tamagotchi with some new additions that will keep the classic look and feel of the original game, but with new colors that will bring the device to life like never before.”
The colorways include options such as Purple with Pink, Translucent Blue, Rainbow, Striped Tiger, Pink with Yellow, White with Black, Red Glitter and Mermaid, to name a few.
The toys will be available for preorder on Sept. 30. For more information on the Tamagotchi revival, visit Bandai’s website.
