Watch Bonnie Raitt Sing “Angel From Montgomery” On This Day in 1993

The song “Angel of Montgomery” has had a life that goes far beyond its maker. John Prine wrote the song for his 1971 self-titled album, now a classic. Many artists have recorded the song, but the most famous among them just might be country star Bonnie Raitt and her beautifully sentimental version, which appeared on her 1974 album Streetlights. Nowadays, everyone from John Mayer and Maren Morris to Brandi Carlile and Maggie Rogers covers the song, but the versions by Prine and Raitt remain timeless.

On this day (Nov. 6) in 1993, Raitt played a concert at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, Calif., during which she performed songs like “The Road’s My Middle Name,” “Mississippi Road” and “Thing Called Love.” She also performed the aforementioned “Angel From Montgomery,” but with a special twist: Folk singer Ruthie Foster joined Raitt on stage for the song, and their duet positively soars. Raitt, a lifelong activist, dedicates the song to Molly Ivins, the newspaper columnist and political commentator, and Ann Richards, the Democratic 45th governor of Texas.
