The rumors are true: For an extremely limited time, Starbucks will release their fabled Unicorn Frappuccino at select locations in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
It’s no secret that rainbow-colored foods and drinks have been popular for awhile now, from bagels to sushi. Now, Starbucks has finally decided to jump in on the trend. Buzz about the colorful drink, which for a time was on the coffee chain’s secret menu, began on Reddit when one employee found a mysterious packet of pink powder. As more photos began to leak out, Starbucks finally released a statement confirming the rumors.
The official description sounds more like candy than coffee. It’s a sickly looking (but maybe also delicious?) combination of crème frappuccino, mango syrup, sour blue flavoring, vanilla whipped cream, and pink and blue powder topping. Apparently, the drink requires a bit of mixing to achieve full Unicorn-iness. “Like its mythical namesake, the Unicorn Frappuccino blended crème comes with a bit of magic, starting as a purple beverage with swirls of blue and a first taste that is sweet and fruity,” said Starbucks. “But give it a stir and its color changes to pink, and the flavor evolves to tangy and tart.”
One noticeably absent ingredient? Coffee. If we ask for a Dirty Unicorn, maybe they’ll give us one with a shot of espresso. We’ll find out and report back.
The Unicorn Frappucino will be available at participating locations in the U.S., Canada and Mexico from April 19-23. While the sugary pink explosion has dominated the Starbucks news cycle today, the company also wants you to know they do stuff besides raise your blood sugar to dangerous levels—they also plant trees. 100 million coffee trees by 2025, to be exact. It’s no Unicorn Frappucino, but it ain’t bad.
