Genre-fluid Australian band Shady Nasty released their new EP Bad Posture on Friday, along with a new music video for their song “77SUNK.” The trio of Sydney “weirdo punks” are seriously difficult to classify—and they know it, too.
“We feel disconnected within our music scene,” muses vocalist and guitarist Kevin Stathis in the band’s bio. “We sound different to every band here, but at the same time, we write about our life and our experiences, so in a way it is Sydney-based.”
The group could best be described as post-punk, but with a little energetic hip-hop flair. Along with their sound being different, so are their videos. The video for “77SUNK” looks more like a homemade YouTube vlog, rather than a professionally produced music video. That’s because it is: The video was directed and shot by drummer Luca Watson and Harry Welsh, with VFX editing and design by Curtis Agnew.
The band explain the video in a statement:
“77SUNK” deals with growth and adversity. The opening lyric “Bad posture” refers to Stathis’ hunched back, of which he is constantly reminded by his relatives who tell him to “straighten up.” This directive offers a glimpse of the rigid notions of how one should live that his immigrant family have tried to impress upon him. Importantly, Shady Nasty presents a new path that many of Stathis’ friends and family would not be able to understand.
The new EP is available now, and features previously released songs “Get Buff”, “Jewellery” and “AA.” “77SUNK” is its fourth and final track.
Shady Nasty will be performing at both New Colossus and SXSW, and are performing songs off the new EP, as well as touring in their home of Australia.
