Before his 5th birthday, DJ Aktual was vibing to his mom’s collection of Prince, Michael Jackson, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash and Newcleus. Enamored with the beats and rhymes, the soundtrack of Aktual’s teen years included rap savant MF DOOM and west coast independent royalty like Del the Funkee Homsapien, Murs, Freestyle Fellowship and Jurassic 5.
How could he join the left coast revolution? Enter the Scratch Piklz and the Beat Junkies and Aktual had his answer. His mom couldn’t afford turntables, but his aunt had a record player. With used plates from the thrift shop, Aktual learned to scratch, rewind and juggle.
After saving up cash, he finally bought his Technics tables at 18. Throw a mixer in the middle and Aktual was on his way.
At 20, he started making beats and released his first project: Compose Complex: The Beat Tape. Around 2010, Aktual came face to face with the forgiveness and hope offered in Christ. This faith reinvigorated him and gave his music a greater purpose ... beyond just rocking a show!
