I think this is what anime is like. I mean, not all anime. But some. Science fiction blended with history and religion and lots of shouting and giants and robots and explosions. My anthropology of religion classes are almost a decade behind me, but I’m going to guess that the fleet of spaceships led by eight demigods (of which Asura is one) fighting space squids is, if not an invention of the game, at best a loose adaptation. The Brahmastra of the Mahabharata is definitely not a giant half-man floating in space.... read more

I regularly wonder how I’d describe the games I’m playing to my parents. Mom and pop play games, so they’re familiar with what the medium offers. “Space soldiers invade a planet of space Nazis” and “wistful cowboy fights to find his family” aren’t going to earn me confused looks. My relatives have real-life reference points aiding their understanding of why I’d play these games, and paring them down to these bare essentials makes games’ goals even easier to convey. I cannot employ the same tactic to Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. “So, Dad, super-heroes punching anime chicks... read more

(XBLA, PSN)
That Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 exists at all is enough to give those unfamiliar with the franchise a throbbing headache. It's the downloadable sequel to the 2008 remake of the 1988 NES platformer that never got a sequel in the first place, but entirely unrelated to the other 2009 Bionic Commando title that went to retail. Though the original was never massively popular or successful, it was fondly remembered for its banishment of the "jump" button and the way it forced players to exclusively use Nathan Spencer's bionic arm to navigate the warpath towards his end-goal: assassinating Hitler (depending on... read more

In my mind, I was silently saying “goodbye.” Bye Nintendo! Bye Capcom, sorry we didn’t get to talk this year. Bye Sony! Why didn’t you call back? Bye all the rest of you. E3 would be over in 20 minutes and I fought the urge to stick around until the announcement came: “We are sorry, but the expo floor is closing. Please head to the nearest exit.” It’s always sad to be asked to leave a place. So I headed for the door, for reality. And I got ready for what comes next, the return of the melancholy that goes... read more

(Xbox 360)
Developer: Capcom Publisher: Capcom Platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 Shootout with space pirates and gigantic bugs, what could go wrong? Well One of the great things about video game sequels—especially as opposed to movie ones—is that they’re often better than their predecessors. Game makers often use the second go-round to fix the mistakes of the previous outing, as well as to add new ideas. But while Lost Planet 2 builds upon the 2006 original, these additions unfortunately don’t make the game any better and, in some case, actually make it worse.... read more

Developer: Inti Creates Publisher: Capcom Platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii Sometimes an angry robot baseball isn't enough Capcom asked the team at Inti Creates, "If you could put all your best Mega Man ideas into a new game, what would you make?" The result was Mega Man 9. Then Capcom asked, "What else ya got?" And so we have Mega Man 10, an unpolished sequel that shows signs of developer fatigue. MM10 is not a disaster—there's a wacky, fun cast of bosses, like Strike Man (a huge cybernetic baseball) and Sheep Man (just what it sounds like). Dozens... read more
