Sony Injects New Life Into Spider-Man Spin-Off Venom

Sony is balancing the scales of good and evil with its revived plans for a Venom movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Dante Harper has been tapped to write a new screenplay for the film, which has been trapped in a complicated production web since 2008. Sony’s Columbia Pictures label will back the sinister nemesis to the popular arachnid-based hero Spider-Man. The studio is staying silent on major plot details for the film, but comic fans know the alien symbiote well for his anti-hero qualities and ability to give its very human host powers that rival Spider-Man’s.

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, both of whom were involved in Sony’s plans to expand the Spidey universe post-The Amazing Spiderman through characters such as Venom and the Sinister Six, will serve as the movie’s producers.

Though Sony’s Venom and Marvel’s re-vamp of the Tom Holland starring Spider-Man storyline will remain unrelated, it seems like the perfect time to revive the dark-clad character through vague association. In a post Deadpool era, perhaps they’ll even have the guts to give Venom some teeth.
