Last Night’s South Park Was a Prequel to Videogame The Fractured But Whole

How’s that for some cross-media synergy? The long-running South Park put out an episode last night that ties in directly with Ubisoft’s forthcoming videogame, The Fractured But Whole. Besides setting up events for the RPG, the episode also took the opportunity to hit at some other targets as well, specifically Facebook and the spread of “fake news.”

We won’t recap the entire episode here, in case you haven’t seen it yet, but the premise basically had our South Park superheroes “Coon and Friends” build their own Marvel-esque cinematic franchise, starting with a Netflix series. Butters, under his alter-ego Professor Chaos, attempts to combat this and start a civil war a la Captain America by recruiting internet trolls to spread false news stories about the heroes.

The end of the episode essentially meets up where the videogame begins, with the last scene resembling the E3 2016 trailer for the game (seen below). If you missed the episode, you can watch it on the official South Park Studios website here. Meanwhile, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, which announced its gold status with a pretty uncomfortable trailer, will release Oct. 17 for Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC.
