Cymbals Eat Guitars Share Jazzy New Single, Announce New Album

Staten Island shoegazers Cymbals Eat Guitars have announced the release of their forthcoming new album, Pretty Years. Produced by John Congleton, the record is set to be released on Sept. 16 through Sinderlyn. This is Cymbals Eat Guitars’ fourth album, following their last success, LOSE. With the announcement, the band shared an upbeat, jazz-inspired single, “Wish.”

The band has faced a lot since it was founded in 2007, including a heart condition from guitarist Joseph D’Agostino and the death of his black lab. Many of these experiences, in addition to some of their favorite artists, have influenced their music—their band name comes from a Lou Reed quote describing the Velvet Underground.

“We wanted to make a more energetic record,” said bassist Matthew Whipple in a description of the new album. “I personally looked to artists like Springsteen, ‘70s Bowie, The Smiths, The Cure, Neil Young as inspiration for—not really for sound as much as for that dichotomy of bands who were entertainers still making, at times, weird dark music and writing songs that seem totally over-the-top by today’s rock band standards.”
