My name is Stephen Utting. I have loved music all my life. When I held my first guitar, at the age of 7, I had just watched BB King play on the TV. The TV belonged to a friend and it was the first time I had seen one, but that seemed to matter less as I watched BB King play. I tried to match what I heard on my half size classical guitar. I didn’t sound the same but I was hooked. By the age of 21 I had been playing in a number of bands and styles. I then decided to go to London and make my fortune and find fame. I went from audition to audition and kept hearing the same thing – “We have so many guitarists auditioning we can’t see you all but we are struggling to find a bass player so if is interested in auditioning for bass that would be good.” I decided to get a bass and teach myself enough to audition. I went to my first audition as a bass player and I was the only one there. I got the job, went on a huge learning curve and haven’t looked back. Soon other guitarists were asking me to teach them to play bass and my teaching career began. Now 30 years later this series of books are the result of my playing and teaching careers. Enjoy!
