Altars are important markers in the lives of disciples of Jesus. They remind us of what God has already done and help strengthen us for the journey ahead…
There’s a story in the Bible about the coming of age of a young man, a leader named Joshua. Joshua is Moses’ right hand man as Moses leads the Israelites out of Egypt, out of slavery, through the wilderness and toward the land that God had promised to give them. But now Moses is dead, and it is up to Joshua to be strong and courageous and lead the people entrusted to him. Into the promised land.
But there is an obstacle in their way. There is a river to cross.
And so God commands Joshua to have the priests step into the river with the ark of the covenant (the sign of God’s very presence, His dwelling among the people). The waters stop flowing from upstream, and all of the people of God cross over to the over side, on dry ground.
God then commands Joshua to have representatives from each tribe to go back into the riverbed where the priests are standing, pick up a stone, bring it out to the other side and build a memorial, an altar, to remember what God has done. Then Joshua says to the Israelites,
In the future your children will ask, ‘What do these stones mean?’ Then you can tell them, ‘This is where the Israelites crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’ For the Lord your God dried up the river right before your eyes, and he kept it dry until you were all across, just as he did at the Red Sea,. when he dried it up until we had all crossed over. He did this so all the nations of the earth might know that the Lord’s hand is powerful, and so you might fear the Lord your God forever.
This album, these songs, are an altar, a marker along the way, so that we remember God’s goodness to us! As you read the stories that inspired these testimonies of God’s faithfulness, we pray and hope that they will remind you of the faithfulness of God in your own life, and spur you on with new courage and strength, no matter where you are in journey as a follower of Jesus. God bless you…
