"The '60s were a leap in human consciousness and the music was like Dali, with many colors and revolutionary ways. The youth of today must go there to find themselves." — Carlos Santana
Having been a traditionally trained artist turned musician, I found the above quote by Carlos Santana incredibly influential in providing a clear direction for the conception of this project. Once read, I immediately focused my research directly on Salvador Dali and found an instant fascination with his life. I considered naming this project simply “Dali” but felt the type of art he was most popular for suited the project best. I recognized the traditional surrealist principles of unnatural or irrational juxtapositions and combinations, matched perfectly with the mixture of current Hip-hop and the music I had sampled from the late sixties and early seventies. Most artwork within the Avant-garde movement were products of the unconscious mind and were wittedly expressed, especially in the titles of their artwork, hence my decision to title this project “So•real•ism”. With that said, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride through this unexpected journey of sonic surprise, and unnatural genre combination.
