Ed Sheeran Quits Twitter After Receiving Negative Online Reaction to Game of Thrones Cameo

Ed Sheeran has officially quit Twitter after receiving a barrage of hate regarding his lengthy Game of Thrones cameo in the season seven premiere.

Sheeran plays one of a group of Lannister soldiers whom Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) encounters in the woods. She hears him singing and compliments the song, which does seem a bit forced and in your face. Other musicians have made far less assertive appearances, including Of Monsters and Men, heavy-metal band Mastodon and Coldplay’s Will Champion. Some fans praised the lighthearted moment Sheeran brought to the otherwise grim show, but he must have seen more harsh words than kind ones on the social media site.

The pop star told The Sun earlier this month that he had “come off Twitter completely” because of the rude comments he receives. “One comment ruins your day. But that’s why I’ve come off it. The head-fuck for me has been trying to work out why people dislike me so much.” Sheeran recently came under fire when festivalgoers at Glastonbury accused him of using a backing track, which Sheeran addressed by explaining the process of live looping via Twitter.

It appears as though Sheeran just grew tired of the online abuse. Fans noticed his Twitter account had been deleted on Monday (July 17) night, though at the time of this writing, it appears the account is back up, though it’s oddly displaying Sheeran’s most recent tweets as being from 2015.
