Rock ’N’ Roll Animal: Five notable moments in cross-species collaboration
Recently in the Paste office, we received a press release about an Oct. 6 event called Gimme Shelter, which will feature Debbie Harry, Moby and Earl Greyhound, and which was described as a “concert benefiting NYC’s at-risk animals.” Being dog-owners ourselves, we were moved by the whole idea—moved, that is, to commemorate Gimme Shelter with a list of other significant collaborations between musicians and animals. We’re sure we missed some good ones. Add yours in the comments.... read more

Good news, Morrissey fans! Or, to be more exact: Good news, Morrissey fans who live in the UK (or who don't mind ponying up some of those weak American dollars for an import)! The Mozfather, fresh off his recent scuffle with Brit-rag NME, has showered his fervent acolytes with not one, but three big announcements. First and foremost, the avowed animal-lover and racism-hater (also, #57 on Paste's list of the 100 best living songwriters) will wassail across France, England and Scotland this winter in the weeks leading up to the UK release of his Greatest Hits on Polydor/Decca. When the... read more
Found in: Music, NewsThe gloves come off in Morrissey vs. NME spat
Uh-oh. It looks like we have another headline-monopolizing U.K. tabloid dust-up on our hands. And this one involves two of the biggest entities in Britain's music universe: Morrissey and the NME. The only way this row could get any bigger would be if Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen picked sides on the issue. Stay tuned for that next week. In the meantime, let's get you caught up on all the details. The feud between the Moz and the magazine concerns an interview published in the new NME, entitled "Has the World Changed or Has He Changed?" In the story, Morrissey... read more
Found in: Music, NewsMorrissey to stay busy in '08 with new album, tour
It's hard to remember now, but there was once a time when Morrissey's solo career lay dormant and half-forgotten by the public. Following 1997's Maladjusted, the Moz went strangely silent, allowing his musical progeny (i.e. the whole Britpop crowd) to slug it out on the charts. But when You Are The Quarry arrived out of the blue in 2004, Morrissey suddenly became an institution once again. He's criss-crossed the world several times over since his return, and according to his manager Merck Mercuriadis, the Moz Marathon should continue well into next year. "He'll be back out in January," Mercuriadis told... read more
Found in: Music, NewsMorrissey to spend 2/3 of tour in three cities
"I'm a serious artist," Morrissey insisted onstage at Atlanta's Chastain Park Amphitheatre last month, shortly before pulling off his shirt, tossing it into the crowd at his feet and disappearing backstage for a new wardrobe. "Only a very serious artist indeed would keep a rack of ironed cut-and-sewns behind the curtain, ready to go," one might have thought in response. "A man has to do what he has to do to maintain some dignity in a place with so many glowsticks." Chastain Park was one of the dates a throat-strained Morrissey didn't cancel on his most recent tour but, being... read more
Found in: Music, NewsMorrissey started something he couldn't finish
Morrissey started something that he couldn’t finish. He quit the Boston show mid-way through Tuesday night after his throat acted up, and he’s still ill. Please excuse him from live shows, he's got this terrible infection coming on. These things take time to clear up, so his doctor’s ordered him to rest his vocal chords through Friday. What difference does it make, you ask? Tomorrow night’s show in Philadelphia is postponed – but don’t panic on the streets, your tickets are valid for an eventual make-up show and Saturday’s Madison Square Garden concert is still on. Maybe you’d like to... read more
