By Grand Central Station, the first album by Winnipeg-based duo Heavy Bell, takes its title and much of its lyrical content from the work of writer Elizabeth Smart, setting her book length prose poem By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept to the sound of beautiful, sweeping music.
Unbeknownst to them at the time, another local outfit, the Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers used that same book as the inspiration for a piece they performed in 2012 under the name 97 Positions of the Heart. And when Heavy Bell saw footage from that work, they knew the right move would be to combine their efforts into something celebratory and beautiful.
The result is this stunning music video which highlights the reeling, cyclical song “Certainly” and complements it with shots of WCD dancers rendered in slow motion and layered with other blurring aftereffects by director Sarah Constible. It’s an absolute wonder to behold and only furthers our desire to hear the full album from Heavy Bell, which will the band will be self-releasing in January.
