Don’t call it a comeback: We’ve been anxiously awaiting Ryan Reynolds’ return as the Merc with a Mouth since Deadpool first blew up the box office back in early 2016, and now, more than two years later, Deadpool 2 is on our doorsteps. The sequel’s final trailer debuted Thursday morning, and it’s an explosive, explicit adrenaline rush that should help propel Deadpool’s second coming (phrasing) to further superhero cinematic glory.
As final trailers do, this one pulls back a bit more of the curtain on Deadpool 2’s plot: We find out that Josh Brolin’s fearsome cybernetic soldier Cable is out to kill a kid (Julian Dennison), whom Deadpool and his “super-duper fuckin’ group” have to protect. Said group is shown to include Zazie Beetz’s probability-altering mutant Domino, as well as Terry Crews‘ Bedlam and Lewis Tan‘s Shatterstar, all of whom are “very cinematic” indeed. Significantly less cinematic (and all the funnier for it) is Rob Delaney’s Peter, who delivers a laugh-out-loud kicker at the end.
The trailer is absolutely littered with in-jokes: Deadpool calls Cable “Thanos” (in a nod to Brolin’s Infinity War supervillain) and mocks him as being grim-dark enough for the DC universe, while a spoiler-y title card refers to 20th Century Fox as “the studio that killed Wolverine.”
