Hayao Miyazaki, one of the world’s foremost living storytellers, makes for an excellent documentary subject. If you’ve ever wanted to know what his process is like, you’re in luck: a four-part documentary miniseries, titled 10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki, is now available to stream for free online.

The docuseries takes place during the production processes of Ponyo and The Wind Rises. Documentarian Kaku Arakawa, who also made last year’s Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki, is a fly on the wall, never interviewing but always observing. 10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki was commissioned by Japan’s public broadcast network, NHK.

Miyazaki is a complicated figure. He’s both deeply sentimental and hyper-critical, unrelenting in the pursuit of perfection; he’s charming, but with a bite. 10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki also digs into the filmmaker’s relationship with his son Goro, who is hard at work on his first film Tales from Earthsea, and reveals the family’s strained relationship.

Regardless, it’s always fascinating to gain new insights into such a deeply influential artist. You can watch 10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki via NHK’s website here, and while he’s on your mind, you might as well revisit our ranking of Studio Ghibli’s films over here.
