There are a limited number of people who could meet the incredibly high standards for shade, side-eye and general goth-y badassery that Anjelica Huston set for the role of Morticia Addams. Lucky for us, Charlize Theron is one of them.
Theron and fellow Oscar winner Allison Janney have joined the cast of MGM’s animated Addams Family movie, the studio announced Tuesday. Theron will voice Morticia, the matriarch of the family, while Janney will voice someone much scarier: Morticia’s arch-nemesis Margaux Needler, a crafting reality TV host.
The cast already boasts a wealth of talent, including Oscar Isaac as Gomez, Bette Midler as Grandmama, Chloë Grace Moretz as Wednesday, Nick Kroll as Uncle Fester and Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley, because apparently MGM knows exactly what dreams are made of.
The film is being co-directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan, who worked together on the far less family-oriented Sausage Party. According to MGM president Jonathan Glickman, the directors are seeking “to create something both kids and their parents will enjoy for different reasons.”
Co-director Vernon is seeking to add a new spin to the spooky/kooky family’s story. “I drew from the brilliantly original Charles Addams New Yorker cartoons for the look of the film and decided to tell the story of how Gomez and Morticia meet, find their house and start their family,” Conrad explained in a statement. The real-life Addams—who previously worked retouching photos of too-gruesome corpses for the covers of crime magazines and is legitimately buried in a pet cemetery called The Swamp—began contributing Addams family cartoons for the magazine in the 1930s as a freelancer.
The Addams Family is due out Oct. 11, 2019, just in time for Halloween.
