Warner Bros. Reportedly Developing a Matrix Reboot

According to THR, Warner Bros. is in the very early stages of putting together another film in the Matrix franchise.

The studio is said to be eyeing Michael B. Jordan (Creed, Fruitvale Station) to star, while writer Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk, X-Men: The Last Stand) is supposedly already putting together a treatment. The directors and writers of the original trilogy, the Wachowski siblings, are said to not be involved with the project. The prospective reboot is reportedly only just beginning development, so it’ll likely be while before we get any concrete news about it. For those who somehow don’t know, the original The Matrix centers around a computer hacker (Keanu Reeves’ Neo) who becomes aware of our true reality: one in which humanity is kept asleep and enslaved as our bodies are harvested for energy by sentient machines. As for the the other two films … we don’t really talk about those.

It’ll be interesting to see how the film handles its now-iconic “red pill/blue pill” duality as men’s rights activists and Gamergaters have since co-opted the sci-fi terminology. For all we know at this point, the new Neo could begin the story as a sexist, racist Let’s Player who must shed his ignorant views to take down malicious technological behemoths known as “4Chan” and “Reddit.” (We can hope, can’t we?)

Be sure to stay tuned to Paste, just in case Warner Bros. does start to get this reboot ball rolling faster than we expect.
