Starflyer 59 – Talking Voice Vs. Singing Voice
Starflyer frontman settles on third option: breathing voice
It seems peculiar that Jason Martin, the creative force behind Starflyer 59, would call so much attention to his singing voice by referencing it in the band’s latest album title. Because Martin doesn’t really sing his lyrics; he breathes them. With his tenth record in 11 years as the 59th Starflyer, Martin further reveals his determination to replicate both the shoegazing qualities of My Bloody Valentine and New Order’s bouncy rhythm section. But more than anything, the outspokenly Christian songwriter’s lethargic delivery sounds like he has just been resurrected from a long nap. The vocal monotony truly is a shame because Martin’s compositions are often warmly seductive. We can only hope that on the next album, after all votes have been tallied, Martin’s singing voice will prevail.
