Producer Gail Katz (The Perfect Storm, Pawn Sacrifice) acquired the film rights to adapt the boardgame back in 2015, and now Variety reports that Sony Pictures is on board with the project. Producers Dan Lin (IT, The LEGO Movie) and Jonathan Eirich will join Katz, working from a script by Blaise Hemingway.
The award-winning boardgame by Klaus Teuber focuses on the fictional island of Catan, where players compete over the natural resources to create the dominant civilization.
“We’re excited to be working with Sony to bring the iconic world of Catan to life,” said Katz. “As huge fans of the game, we’re struck by the endless possibilities of stories that it could inspire. It’s not every day that you have the opportunity to work in a world beloved by millions of people, and expand its story for the screen.”
So look forward to a Catan movie in the next few years, with dramatic scenes centering on having too many sheep and not enough bricks.
