Like all the best noise bands, the members of Lexington, Kentucky’s Hair Police have about 3,000 other side projects and alternate outlets for their creativity. Robert Beatty, for example, has a thriving career as an artist and graphic designer, concocting multi-colored psychedelic images for the album covers for everyone from Wooden Wand to Kesha. As for Trevor Tremaine, he has logged time in experimental outfits like Burning Star Core and Death Unit. But he reserves some of his most daring creative energy for his project ATTEMPT.
Under this name, Tremaine is set to release a new four song EP called Against The Light on which he dares to try a little of everything: zooted psych-folk, disco funk, and, on the epic title track which you can hear below, a bit of Holland-era Beach Boys as filtered through a UFO Club aesthetic. The song starts off as minimalist as you please, dripping with Tremaine’s vocal harmonies, before an urgent bit of arpeggiated synth slowly intrudes to lead us to the guitar jam coda. If you like what you hear here, be sure to check out the full EP, which is out on October 27th via Desperate Spirits Records. Or just keep this on repeat while you quietly melt into your office chair.
