The Pervert’s Michelle Perez & Remy Boydell Reunite for ‘Unofficial Official’ Sequel
“The Bronze” Continues The Pervert in a Surreal StandaloneArt by Remy Boydell Comics Features Michelle Perez & Remy Boydell
Michelle Perez and Remy Boydell’s The Pervert was one of 2018’s biggest, most uncompromising surprises. Released under by Image Comics, best known for high-concept action, sci-fi and horror series, The Pervert proved the publisher’s unparalleled potential when it chooses to embrace a wider range of stories and storytellers. And thanks to Image’s stance on creator rights, Perez and Boydell are free to self-publish something like “The Bronze,” an “unofficial official” sequel to The Pervert, currently limited to a 100-copy print run available on Boydell’s StoreEnvy site.
Despite the title, readers seeking either titillation or a happy ending from The Pervert will likely leave disappointed, if not a little bummed out. Perez and Boydell’s graphic novel is the definition of “unflinching” in its portrayal of a young trans woman surviving Seattle via sex work. Perez’ script invites readers into this world, bumps and all, and the story, which eschews tidiness at every turn, feels memoir-like in narrative structure. Characters appear and disappear without fanfare, and the ending is a downbeat if realistic note. Boydell draws and paints The Pervert with anthropomorphic figures, which recalls early alternative comics and forces readers to more actively consider their relationship to the book’s cast.
“The Bronze” picks up where The Pervert left off, but works as a surreal standalone all by itself. Paste readers can exclusively peep the (somewhat NSFW) story below, and can head to Boydell’s shop to pick up the full, uncensored print version, which contains scenes not shown in our preview. The Pervert remains available from Image Comics.
