Take a Gander at Will Smith’s Genie in New Teaser for Aladdin
Image via Disney/YouTubeRemember when those initial promo photos for Aladdin were released and people wondered why Genie wasn’t blue?
The premiere of the film’s new “special look” teaser during Sunday’s broadcast of the 2019 Grammys has your answer.
The latest teaser for the Guy Ritchie-helmed, live-adaptation of the 1992 Disney animated film revealed Will Smith’s portrayal of Genie in his final form. And boy, is he blue …
Smith previously told Entertainment Weekly that instead of trying to compete with the original Genie, famously voice-acted by the late Robin Williams, he plans to personalize the role and inject the character with some “hip-hop flavor.”
Smith said:
I started to feel confident that I could deliver something that was an homage to Robin Williams but was musically different. Just the flavor of the character would be different enough and unique enough that it would be in a different lane, versus trying to compete.
