Disney Releases First Teaser for Kenneth Branagh’s Artemis Fowl

Disney has released the first teaser for director Kenneth Branagh’s Artemis Fowl, based on the beloved children’s fantasy series by Eoin Colfer.

The film follows 12-year-old boy genius Artemis Fowl II (newcomer Ferdia Shaw), the descendent of a long line of criminal masterminds, who stumbles into an underground, high-tech world of fairies and other magical creatures. In order to fund the search for his missing father, the young antihero kidnaps Captain Holly Short (Lara McDonnell), an officer in LEPrecon, the fairy civilization’s law enforcement division. LEPrecon is led by Commander Root, played by Judi Dench in a gender flip from the original novels, who serves as the narrator in the first teaser.

Scored by Radiohead’s haunting “Decks Dark,” the teaser presents a fittingly dark first look into the magical world of Artemis Fowl.

Directed by Branagh, the film also stars Tamara Smart, Nonso Anozie, Hong Chau and Josh Gad. Judy Hofflund and Branagh produce, with Angus More Gordon and Matthew Jenkins serving as executive producers.

Artemis Fowl bows in U.S. theaters on Aug. 9, 2019.
