Watch the Powerful First Trailer for Amazon Studios’ Weighty Drama Crown Heights

The first trailer for Amazon’s drama Crown Heights is here, giving us a taste of what the Sundance audience was fawning over back in January. The film is based on a true story that was popularized by a 2005 episode of the podcast This American Life.

Sporting dreadlocks and a Trinidadian accent, Lakeith Stanfield (Get Out, Atlanta) plays immigrant Collin Warner, a man wrongfully convicted of murdering a Brooklyn teen in Crown Heights in 1980. His friend, Carl King, devoted his entire life to seeing that Warner was released from prison and cleared of the charges.

Googling the case will tell you that King’s efforts to free his friend were successful, so the suspense doesn’t lie in wondering if Warner will get the justice he deserves. Instead, it lies in the convincing portrayal of the real-life characters who lived out a modern-day horror story for 20 years, watching as their loved one served 15 to life for a crime he did not commit. The subject is timely, seeing as the newest regime—oops, we mean administration—is cracking down on crime, specifically crime committed by immigrants.

The movie has been made in partnership with IFC Films and will be released via Amazon on Aug. 25. Watch the trailer above.
