Netflix has announced the 2025 release of Eddie, a film tracing the life and career of iconic comedian Eddie Murphy. Its announcement came as part of the streaming service’s promotional event, “Next of Netflix.”
The film recounts Murphy’s rise to fame, from teen comic to Saturday Night Live star. Netflix has promised an intimate deep dive into Murphy’s multifaceted, nearly 50-year career, as well as a glimpse into his home. The film will detail the comedian’s influence on hit comedies such as Raw (1987), Beverly Hills Cop (1984), Coming to America (1988), Trading Places (1983), and the Shrek franchise. “Murphy discusses entertaining three generations of fans with a filmography that spans comedy, action, drama, animation, musicals, and family fare,” says the streamer in its press statement. The film also promises a peek into what’s to come for Murphy in the future. The comedian has confirmed upcoming roles in Amazon MGM’s The Pickup and Pink Panther, as well as another appearance as Donkey in the long-awaited Shrek 5.
The film is directed by Academy Award-winning editor Angus Wall and produced by John Davis, John Fox, Charissse Hewitt, Terry Leonard and Kent Kubena.
Although some fans have expressed excitement about the prospect of an Eddie Murphy documentary, we’ve also criticized Netflix’s willingness to commit large sums of cash to a handful of existing comedy mega stars rather than investing any of those funds in the younger generation of upcoming entertainers. This is a common and unfortunate state of affairs when it comes to streaming comedy, although we doubt it’s likely to dent enthusiasm for Eddie, the first promotional image of which can be seen above. The film lands on Netflix later in 2025.
