New on HBO Now: All the Movies and TV Coming in January

2018 grows closer by the day, and with it comes a new year in which to watch things. 12 months, 52 or so weeks, 365 days, 8760 hours, 525,600 minutes—however you measure it, we can tell you were going to spend as much of next year as possible on our couches, streaming only the finest movies and TV. Aiding in that endeavor is the following list, which details all the programming that HBO Now is adding next month. Let’s get into it.

HBO’s streaming service has a mind-blowing feature film lineup on the way in January, with the entire Harry Potter series leading the way on Jan. 1. Those eight blockbusters, along with 2016 prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, have never before streamed on a single network, unedited and commercial-free, so you’re going to want to make time to explore the Wizarding World in full to kick off 2018. Also exciting is the impending addition of HBO’s original documentary David Bowie: The Last Five Years, exploring the last five years of the Starman’s time on earth and debuting on what would have been the legendary musician’s 71st birthday: Jan. 8. Those are only the beginning of HBO Now’s noteworthy film additions; also on the docket are all three of Robert Zemeckis’ beloved Back to the Future films, the latest delightfully over-the-top Fast & Furious installment The Fate of the Furious, classic 1978 college comedy Animal House, Alexander Payne’s acclaimed 2004 wine country drama Sideways, acclaimed young-adult romance Everything, Everything, David O. Russell’s Gulf War action-comedy Three Kings, Amy Schumer-starring mother-daughter kidnapping comedy Snatched and critically panned Tupac biopic All Eyez on Me. Incoming flicks fit for the whole family include Dreamworks’ animated smash How to Train Your Dragon, 2003 Louis Sachar adaptation Holes, the Rick Moranis-starring shrinking adventure Honey, I Shrunk The Kids and its first sequel Honey, I Blew Up the Kid. (No Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves!, sadly.)

Moving now to HBO Now’s television offerings in the offing, a trio of HBO shows are coming back for second seasons next month, while another is coming back for its sixteenth. Pete Holmes’ semi-autobiographical comedy series Crashing—about which Paste has had decidedly mixed feelings, as you’ll see here and here—kicks off season two on Jan. 14, as does the Sarah Jessica Parker- and Thomas Haden Church-starring dramedy Divorce. The sophomore season of HBO’s slice-of-life pot comedy High Maintenance, which started as a web series, joins the party on Jan. 19. And Real Time With Bill Maher, which, unfortunately, continues to be a television show, will appear on television on Jan. 20. Whee. Lastly, Steven Soderbergh’s innovative murder-mystery Mosaic, released as an interactive app on Android and iOS in November, debuts as a six-part limited series on Jan. 22. Soderbergh has said that Mosaic is not a movie, nor is it a TV show, so we’ll have to wait until January to find out what on earth it is.

And lest we forget what’s leaving HBO Now in January, there are a couple of films we ought to take note of. Spike Jonze mind-bender Adaptation, Steven Spielberg’s sprawling con artist caper Catch Me If You Can, vivid and hyper-violent comic adaptation Frank Miller’s Sin City, Ron Howard’s Oscar-nominated Frost/Nixon, gaudy gangster classic Scarface and modern horror essential The Ring all cease streaming on Jan. 31, so toss those on your lists (or bump them up) as you see fit. If you’re not interested in those films (or the others listed below), you’ll soon find them easier to avoid.
