Despicable Me co-creator Sergio Pablos has teamed up with Netflix to bring his debut film, Klaus , to the big (and TV) screen.
Netflix released work-in-progress footage from their first original animated feature at the Annecy Animation Festival earlier this year, showing off its innovative 2D style—a mix of hand-drawn animation and digital processing that mixes the originality of drawing with the realistic lighting and texturing viewers now expect from digitally animated films—and a powerhouse cast of Jason Schwartzman, JK Simmons, Norm MacDonald, Rashida Jones and Joan Cusack.
Scripted by Pablos alongside Zach Lewis and Jim Mahoney, Klaus is essentially the origin story of Santa Claus. Netflix’s synopsis reads:
When Jesper (Schwartzman) distinguishes himself as the postal academy’s worst student, he is stationed on a frozen island above the Arctic Circle, where the feuding locals hardly exchange words let alone letters. Jesper is about to give up when he finds an ally in local teacher Alva (Jones), and discovers Klaus (Simmons), a mysterious carpenter who lives alone in a cabin full of handmade toys. These unlikely friendships return laughter to Smeerensburg, forging a new legacy of generous neighbors, magical lore and stockings hung by the chimney with care.
It looks and sounds frickin’ adorable, and just in time for Christmas. If you can’t wait that long, at least we’ve got the trailer for you (and some first-look pics)—check it out below.
