Netflix Acquires Action Sci-Fi Film Spectral, Starring Emily Mortimer

Netflix wants to distribute movies, and now it’s added another film to its roster. According to Deadline, the streaming service has picked up Spectral, an action sci-fi film starring James Badge Dale, Emily Mortimer and Bruce Greenwood.

Spectral will follow a DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) scientist who embarks on a deadly mission with a Special Ops team in a battle-scarred and war-torn city. Once there, the team will hunt down mysterious phantom aggressors who have been causing inexplicable civilian deaths.

Based on a short story by Ian Fried and director Nic Mathieu, Spectral was adapted for the screen by Greg Nolfi. The film was shot largely on location in Budapest, and relies heavily on practical effects in order to serve up a realist aesthetic. Netflix has set the film for a Dec. 9 global release, which means it’s one of the many things you’ll be able to watch over the holidays.
