Tom Holland Learned He Was Spider-Man by Checking Marvel’s Instagram

Movies News Spider-Man: Homecoming

Tom Holland sat down with THR to talk about the forthcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming and he dished on some interesting details like how he found out he won the role, who his favorite Avenger is and how much of his Spidey we can expect to see.

If you’re a Spider-Man fan like we are, Marvel’s Instagram post announcing who would play Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe probably sent your heart racing as you excitedly clicked the link to see the reveal. Well, apparently Peter Parker himself went through those same emotions, too. Holland waited a month after his audition without hearing anything about the part and, while laying in bed one day, scrolling through Instagram, he saw: “Marvel just posted a photo saying go to our website and find out who the next Spider-Man is. I went on the Marvel website on my computer and there it was: The new Spider-Man is Tom Holland. I went ballistic, like absolutely nuts.”

Both of the previous cinematic Spider-Men have have expressed congratulations to Holland for his portrayal, but when asked if he’d spoken to either Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield, Holland said he hadn’t. “I watched every single [Spider-Man movie] years before I even got cast in this movie,” he said. “And then we watched them all again and just picked little things that I thought was great and that I’d like to keep.”

And despite being on Team Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War, Holland says that his favorite Avenger isn’t on his side. He said, “Probably Ant-Man. … I love Paul Rudd, he’s such a great guy. … He’s so funny in that movie.”

The last bit of interesting news Holland doled out was a little more info about his Spidey contract with Marvel. Holland said he’s contracted for three solo Spider-Man movies (we already knew a sequel was in the works) but that doesn’t count certain options, like a cameo in Avengers. It seems like a foregone conclusion that Holland’s Spider-Man will team up with Cap, Iron Man and the rest of the Avengers again when Thanos comes calling, but Holland seems to confirm that there’s definitely something in the tank.

Overall, Holland comes off as very charming and down to earth in the interview, but he insists, “I’m not actually Spider-Man by the way, I just pretend.”

Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7, 2017.
