Alicia Vikander Defies Death Repeatedly in First Tomb Raider Trailer

After teasing a trailer and releasing a poster featuring a badly photoshopped raptor neck for star Alicia Vikander, Warner Bros. has released the full first trailer for Tomb Raider.

Stepping away from the Angelina Jolie iteration, this film looks to adapt the 2013 reboot videogame from Eidos and Square Enix, being more of an origin story for Lara Croft. Both game and film have the same basic premise: A young Lara Croft is shipwrecked while on an archeological expedition, and finds herself on a dangerous, isolated island.

While the videogame had Croft going through some truly painful and bloody trials and tribulations, Vikander’s Croft seems a little more confident and almost superhuman, barely batting an eye at the crazy life-threatening situations that come her way. “The fate of humanity is now in your hands,” Croft’s deceased father (Dominic West) tells her through a message—not a cliche at all, right? (Naturally, his first line in the trailer is the also-not-cliche, “If you’re listening to this, then I must be dead.”) While we express some skepticism, the visuals do look on par with the videogame, and we always appreciate some surprise Nick Frost.

Tomb Raider will pickaxe its way into theaters on March 16, 2018. In the meanwhile, check out the first trailer above and a behind-the-scenes video from Warner Bros. below.
