Big Freedia Creates Exclusive Ben & Jerry’s Flavor, Bouncing Beignets

Last week, sweet-toothed powerhouse Tyler, The Creator announced his clothing brand’s collaboration with ice cream giant Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams to produce an exclusive cool peppermint, warm spearmint and white chocolate flavor, set to scoop in stores today, July 8.

The next musician to follow suit is none other than New Orleans bounce mainstay Big Freedia, who joined forces with Ben & Jerry’s this weekend to create a one-time-only batch of “Big Freedia’s Bouncing Beignets.”

The Queen of Bounce’s exclusive flavor is a mix of vanilla ice cream with a bourbon caramel swirl and served with a fresh beignet. Unfortunately, the flavor was only available at a one-time partnership launch party in New Orleans, but a Ben & Jerry’s spokesperson told The Times-Picayune the company hopes to make the flavor available in stores in the future.

Freedia was first connected with the ice cream company after the musician created the flavor on her own and shared it onto her Instagram page in a mock Ben & Jerry’s pint (originally called Big Freedia’s Booty Bouncing Beignets, of course).

All proceeds from the one-time launch party went to benefit local New Orleans nonprofits, including No Kid Hungry, an organization connecting underserved children in New Orleans with federal food and nutrition programs.

The partnership is a striking match on both ends: Freedia is an outspoken sociopolitical activist and recently announced she was developing her own foundation called “Bounce Up,” while the ice cream juggernaut was one of the first major brands to outwardly promote social activism and inclusion.

Though you cannot indulge in the flavor anytime soon, you can drool over Ben & Jerry’s official photos and documentary short for now. Cross your fingers that the flavor will see the (fluorescent grocery store) light of day once more.
