Chance the Rapper Set to Record Album with Kanye West

In a new interview with Peter Rosenberg of Complex, Chance the Rapper has announced a forthcoming project with Kanye West.

After explaining that West encouraged him to multi-task on multiple projects, Chance discussed his work-in-progress. “I’ve been actively working on the project with Childish, and I’m going to do a seven-track with Ye,” Chance said.

In March, Chance revealed that he and Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) had recorded tracks together in Atlanta. ”I feel like if I don’t make a Chance the Rapper mixtape, like a double mixtape, a bunch of 14-year-olds will kick my ass,” Glover joked in the fall, but he should be spared from all that tween wrath. According to Chance, the pair has “six songs that are all fire, but I think the album is going to be more than 14 songs.”

Until now, Chance has stayed mum on forthcoming projects with West. Chance has frequently cited his admiration for West, and the Chicago natives featured each other on the respective opening tracks of West’s The Life of Pablo and Chance’s Coloring Book. Chance also defended West’s recent descent into MAGA-land, for which he later apologized.

West has released five consecutive seven-track albums since last May, acting as a producer on Pusha T’s Daytona, Nas’ NASIR and Teyana Taylor’s K.T.S.E. in addition to rapping on his own collaborative album with Kid Cudi, Kid Sees Ghosts, and his widely debated ye.

Chance’s latest effort with Kanye will follow the abbreviated, seven-track format that the other “Wyoming sessions” albums have. Some have criticized the succinct nature of the albums, but Pusha T defended the format on his Beats 1 Radio show KingPush Radio: “Man, if we can’t kill you in seven songs, we don’t really need to be doing the music.” (He’s got a point: Good luck surviving Daytona.)

Right now, Chance says that he’s in “dry eraseboard mode” as he tries to organize and structure new music, with no official release dates yet announced. He is slated to begin work with West in July. Hear Chance discuss their forthcoming work below, starting around the 12:15 mark.
