Michigan emo punk outfit Dogleg have announced the details of their debut album Melee, out on March 13 via Triple Crown Records. Plus, they’ve shared a new single and video for “Kawasaki Backflip,” which follows their previous single “Fox.” Dogleg will perform at this year’s SXSW, and they’re also heading out on tour with Atlanta rockers Microwave in March and April.
A garage setting and several sequences of smashing stuff may be tired concepts in rock videos at this point, but “Kawasaki Backflip” is a rare instance of a song fiery enough to warrant baseball bats and sledgehammers. The track sees lead singer Alex Stoitsiadis lay out two potential exit strategies for his overflowing inner turmoil (“Will you be the fire or the wind?”), and their dense, ripping guitars swarm with unrelenting force.
Per a press release, their album title stems from their love of Super Smash Bros. Melee. Their bass player, Chase Macinski, is particularly adept at the videogame, challenging fans at his shows to a round with the promise of free Dogleg merchandise if they beat him. Apparently, he’s very rarely been defeated.
