Viagra Boys Announce Debut Album, Don’t Play “Sports” in New Music Video

Sports fans have a variety of anthems and cheers to help get them riled up, so what about the uninterested/unathletic team? Well, Stockholm’s memorably named Viagra Boys (or V**gra Boys, as they’re referred to in spam filter-evading emails) have an anthem for that. Viagra Boys are releasing their debut album Street Worms on Sept. 28 via YEAR0001, and the Swedish post-punk group’s first single from the record is “Sports.”

The song is essentially the noise babbling through your head when listening to someone go off on a sports tangent that makes negative two percent sense to you. “Baseball, basketball, weiner dog, short shorts,” lead vocalist Sebastian Murphy lists. The chorus is composed of the simple repetition of the word “Sports,” and from an outside perspective, it circles around like an unfamiliar chant would—conveying only the base meaning—that or it comes off as a Bro Call, a shouted grip on hyper-masculinity that Viagra Boys are making fun of (and that their name seems to be doing, too).

“Sports” was released earlier this year along with “Jungle Man” and “Beijing Taxi,” and the music video for the track was released Monday. It features Murphy shirtless on a tennis court, shouting into a microphone as a tennis match occurs around him, and yes, he does get hit by a ball. The tennis players pay him no mind as he wanders around, encroaching on their space. Although he does sit in the chair umpire seat briefly, Murphy never tries to play, but as the band posted on their Instagram, talent is subjective.

The record was produced by Daniel Fagerström (Skull Defekts, Chronic Heist) and Pelle Gunnerfeldt (Fireside, The Hives), and features peculiar song titles like “Frogstrap” and “Amphetanarchy.” You can preorder Street Worms here.
