Toney Rhodes, a well-accomplished and internationally known musician, began establishing his respected reputation and credentials as early as 14 years of age. As with many successful artists, Rhodes traces his earliest influence to his familial gospel roots, particularly attributed to the tutelage and musical talents of his mother; along with the opportunity of being front and center as a young organist in his father’s Pentecostal church.
As one of Buffalo’s most sought-after prodigies, the rising composer caught the attention of one of the city’s most legendary musicians and songwriters, Eric M. Reed. The opportunity gifted the young Rhodes with professional tricks and tips of the trade, that would soon enable him to master the art of music arranging and writing.
Rhodes lends his talents to some local bands including a jazz/RnB/funk trio called “JFT” named for the members in the band: Jerry Livingston, Carl “Flute” Johnson and Toney Rhodes. As well as many other bands that range from blues to pop to funk and reggae. Also working extensively with artists such as Grammy nominated Saxophonist: Najee, Joe Wooten (The Wooten Brothers and Steve Miller Band)and more.
With an impressively long list of career accomplishments, international recognition, and an insatiable musical quest and passion for creative expression, Rhodes is currently preparing to release his much anticipated debut CD, "The Buffalo Spell." The underlying inspiration for this project is, “…to zero in on the sound that has made the region of WNY stand out in the industry throughout the years,”
