Beyond the Meme: We Now Know the Entire Life Story of Distracted Boyfriend and His Angry Girlfriend

Remember this couple?

On the surface, it just looks like a pair of young kids going through a difficult time in a relationship. Indeed, the Shutterstock description reads as follows:

“Disloyal man walking with his girlfriend and looking amazed at another seductive girl.”

Clearly. But if you’ve spent any time on the Internet, you know that this image has spawned a thousand memes, from the political:

to the practical:

to the meta-ironic:

But now, we have gone beyond the meme. As Twitter user ajabernathy discovered, these two have a long and rich history. Does their rich interpersonal drama take place entirely on Shutterstock? Yes. Does that do anything to diminish, the complex, timeless, quintessentially American narrative at our fingertips? Absolutely not. From love to marriage to parenthood to bitter betrayal, these two have been through it all. This is the personal and political story of our time, and we present it to you now unabridged. Enjoy!
