Costume Quest Animated Show Coming to Amazon Next Year

Costume Quest, a new animated series based on the games originally conceptualized by Tasha Sounart and developed by Double Fine, is coming to Amazon next year from Frederator Studios.

Much like its videogame counterparts, Costume Quest will tell the story of kids “facing off against the dark forces lurking in the shadows of their sleepy town of Auburn Pines.” Also like the source material, each Halloween costume the children don grants different powers.

Zac Gorman (Uncle Grandpa, Over the Garden Wall) wrote and designed the characters for the show’s 11-minute pilot, which was directed by Pat McHale (Adventure Time, Over the Garden Wall) last year. For reference, here’s a Frederator Facebook post from almost two years ago when the pilot’s voiceover work was completed by four actual kids.

Gorman had previously explored the Costume Quest universe back in 2014 when he and Oni Press released his first-ever graphic novel, Costume Quest: Invasion of the Candy Snatchers. The book focused on Klem, “a misunderstood misfit member of the menacing Grubbins from the first game” who only wants to snatch the trick-or-treaters’ candy, as opposed to the kids themselves.

As of now, the Amazon series’ writing staff has been filled out and Frederator is hard at work. Be sure to check back with Paste for the announcement of the show’s exact 2018 release date.
