New Edible Six Pack Rings Could Save Sea Life

An estimated one million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals and sea turtles become entrapped in plastic or ingest it and die every year. Even if you cut the six pack ring loops, animals can still eat the plastic. Saltwater Brewery, out of Delray Beach, Florida, has created a new edible six pack ring that could potentially cut that figure drastically. Saltwater partnered with some super smart scientists to create a ring made from spent barley and wheat that’s strong enough to hold your sixer together, but completely edible for sea life. According to the brewery, it’s the first 100% biodegradable and edible beer packaging. Saltwater is a brewery founded by surfers and fishermen with a relatively small distribution footprint, but they’re hoping some of the larger breweries will get inspired by their innovation and start using the same edible rings.
